» Pregnancy Reflexology

The purpose of reflexology during pregnancy is

  • Relaxation
  • Alleviate symptoms
  • Support the mother to be healthy
  • Prepare for birth
  • Assist in the prevention of a variety of pregnancy related conditions

Generally any treatment should not commence until after the 1st trimester when the new life is well established in the womb. In my clinic a specialist chair is used to ensure the utmost comfort of the pregnant client.

Relaxation for the mother is equally good for her developing baby

Relaxation is the antidote to stress. Many women find that pregnancy in addition to their normal day to day activities can put them under pressure. Reflexology throughout pregnancy is appropriate for relaxation and stress reduction.

Many common pregnancy symptoms can be alleviated with reflexology. These include;

Oedema
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Headaches
Constipation
Haemorrhoids
High blood pressure (not suitable for pre eclampsia or eclampsia)
Tiredness
Morning sickness
Heartburn
Backache
Breathlessness
Sleeplessness

Throughout pregnancy a maternity reflexologist can support the mother to maintain health.

Regular treatments and aftercare advice can help the mother cope with many physical or emotional burdens she may be carrying.

Pregnancy is a time of great hormonal changes and this often stirs up emotions such as fear and apprehension. Physical and emotional support from a professional during this time can turn an ordeal into a pleasure.

Preparing for birth can commence from day one. A positive outlook can create a positive outcome. As the pregnancy advances towards the end of the 3rd trimester expectant mothers will experience Braxton Hicks contractions as the uterus prepares for labour. The placenta is now releasing further hormones to prepare for breastfeeding after delivery and the cervix is continuing to soften. Reflexology during this phase continues to support the mother through these changes and towards the commencement of labour.

Prevention of some unpleasant pregnancy symptoms can be achieve through maternity reflexology

These can include;

Constipation
Haemorrhoids
High blood pressure
Gestational diabetes – prevention must commence at week 15, once symptoms occur it is irreversible.

Reflexology during labour

The key hormone for the onset and development of labour is oxytocin. The first secretion comes from the baby’s pituitary gland and when this crosses the placenta it activates the mother’s pituitary to respond by producing more. The mother’s oxytocin then progresses contractions and labour.

Reflexology during this phase can help to maintain the mother’s secretions and so allow labour to progress naturally and without chemical or physical intervention. Used between contractions reflexology can help to release endorphins so that the mother can actively relax and focus her energy for each contraction.
